"Championing Citizen Involvement"

Goal One Coalition
August 6, 2004

What The Goal One Coalition’s About

The Goal One Coalition champions the role of citizens in decisions affecting the livability of their communities and the sustainable use of the natural environment.

We advocate for the protection of our waters, farms, rangelands, forests, coasts, and other natural landscapes from loss and degradation. We work for vibrant, compact cities and economies that provide for everyone equitably.

We help citizens and citizen groups to organize and advocate effectively, provide information, education and advice about how the land use planning program works, and provide assistance with important issues. We encourage local governments to invite and welcome citizen participation in planning for economically and ecologically sustainable communities. Our most important task in building healthy, sustainable communities is to help citizens take charge of their own future.

As a charitable nonprofit organization, the Goal One Coalition provides assistance to citizens and citizen organizations without charge. The continuation of our work depends entirely upon the generosity of our funders and donors.

Right To Speak & Petition Fund

Summons CITIZENS FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, LLC, CURTIS WAYNE KRUSE and ALLEN B. ELIASON, Plaintiffs, vs. STEVE DOOB, Defendant. Circuit Court for the State of Oregon for the County of Josephine, Case No: 04-CV-0425, SUMMONS (July 22, 2004).

Right To Speak & Petition Fund G1 determined that the Doob summons directly relates to its core mission. Transforming a debate over public policy — including such local issues as zoning, wetlands preservation, school curriculum, or consumer protection — into a private legal dispute is a bad idea. Exercising the constitutional right to speak and petition government for redress of grievances is a significant statewide citizen involvement issue and a good idea.

Mike Walker, Director, Goal One Coalition, is G1's Project Coordinator for the Right To Speak & Petition Fund. The purpose of the fund is to assist with Doob’s legal expenses if a pro bono lawyer is not available and/or for legal expenses not covered by a pro bono lawyer’s services.

Donors to the fund should make their checks to the Goal One Coalition. They should write the following in the "For" space on their checks. "Doob Legal Expense Fund Restricted Donation." The checks should be mailed to the Goal One Coalition.

Any remaining funds in the Right To Speak & Petition Fund after project completion will be disposed of as follows: donors will have the choice of being returned their proportionate remaining donation, having their donation become part of citizen involvement fund (e.g., a citizen legal fund, etc.), or making a donation to G1.
