AUGUSTUS L. WALKER'S DONATION LAND CLAIM: 1855-2005 On September 27, 1850, the United States Congress passed the Donation Land Act. 1 Augustus L. Walker in 1855, under the land act, received a patent to 160 acres on Jumpoff Joe Creek in northern Josephine County (see Hugo Pioneers & Donation Land Claim map on web.) 2 http://jeffnet.org/~hugo Augustus was a farmer and a miner and started the tradition of farming on his land south of Jumpoff Joe Creek.
THE AGRICULTURAL LAND & OPEN SPACES The agricultural land and open spaces of Augustus Walkers donation land claim south of Jumpoff Joe Creek still exist. For the 150 years what started out as prairie has been farm land and is today zoned Exclusive Farm by Josephine County. In the 1930s farmer C.T. Hansen developed a major irrigation pipeline to the farm from upper Jumpoff Joe Creek.
